World Choral Symposium, Argentina

Where’s Burcin gone now?!

Mr. B is away for the start of Term 3 representing New Zealand at the World Symposium on Choral Music in Patagonia, Argentina

Top choirs from all over the world apply, then are invited to participate. It will be an awesome opportunity for Mr. B to do some PD (professional development) and hear some of the best choral music on the planet. It’s not a competition, but a series of performances, workshops and discussions– all about choral music! (I can sense your jealousy from here).

It’s a great honour to be a part of Voices NZ Chamber Choir and to go on this tour, but unfortunately it occurs during term time. Please be vigilant with your studies– performance assessments are just around the corner! And keep up your theory– school exams are coming up as well!

Thanks for your understanding, and that’s for managing your time and studies yourself so that you don’t fall behind. Mr. Emo will be there to assist you– don’t be afraid to ask him for help!

P.S. Little James Michael Burcin arrived in the holidays, on 21 July. And, though he has a full head of hair . . . he was born senza soul patch.

Here are the programmes for the two upcoming assessment concerts.

Solitary Confinement 15 June Playhoue- PROGRAMME ORDER FINAL

Solitary Serenade 17 June NSOM- PROGRAMME ORDER

Some points to remember:

  • Gear (including YOUR gear)– if you haven’t put it on the list DO NOT try to use it. This includes your “own amp”– we will have sound checked and the stage manager does not have to use your gear if you just turn up with it. Of course, if you’ve already listed it on the spreadsheet then you are sweeeeeeet
  • Arrive early– use the programme as a GUIDE ONLY. The concert may go very quickly so arrive early and enjoy others’ performances before you start preparing for your own.
  • Stay and Support your peers– please don’t take off after your performance. Stick around and make sure your peers have a supportive crowd to play to.

Performance Assessments 2011

Senior Music Solo and Group Performance Assessments are fast approaching. This is year Year 11, 12 and 13 Music students present their public performances and wow their audiences (as well as depositing a few more NCEA credits into the bank).

This year will be a little different. In order to avoid another extraordinarily long concert like last year at the Boathouse (yeah, sorry about that), some standards will be assessed elsewhere.

Here’s the story:

Term 2- Week 7

Weds 15 June at the Playhouse (Mapua) and Friday 17 June at the Nelson School of Music:

  • Year 11s- *Group Performances (and those attempting Level 2 solo)
  • Year 12s & 13s- Solo and/or Group Performances

Term 2- Week 9

Around classtimes (i.e. daytime) throughout the week (27 June-1 July), either at Richmond Library (TBC) or Waimea College:

  • Year 11s- Solo Performances (Level 1 only)

Term 3- Week 3

Weds 17 August at the Playhouse (Mapua) and Friday 19 August at the Nelson School of Music:

  • Year 11s- Re-assessment opportunity (optional) for Solo & Group Performances (and and second performance for Level 2 solo)
  • Year 12s & 13s- Solo and/or Group Performances

*Some Year 11s may petition to do their Level 1 Solo Performance at the Playhouse or NSOM. This will be at Mr. Burcin’s discretion and you will need to state your reason (eg. only an electronic piano will be available at the Richmond Library)

Carmen in 3D

If you are one of the lucky 12MUS students who are going to see the opera Carmen in 3D on 30 March, you may find this site interesting.

The story and characters of the opera and previews of the show. The more you know about it the more you will enjoy it!

John Cleese on Creativity
