2.3 Composition Student Instructions 2011

Go to the Composition Spreadsheet2.3 Composition Tasks Spreadsheet
Please enter your thoughts online:

  • Composition Tasks– what is the aim of your composition? A piece for solo or ensemble? A piece about the seasons or emotions?
  • Instruments– list the ensemble name (ex: rock band, string quartet) or specific instruments you are writing music for
  • Working Title– This will surely change, but what idea are you working toward now? This should be more personal and specific than the Composition Task. You might use some lyrics from the chorus, or an image that is inspiring the piece

Remember– your ideas will change along the way, so just update the spreadsheet!

The composition process is as important as the end result.

  1. Hey sir,

Umm, I had to catch a bus today so I ran outta time to upload my compositions but I asked my friend to do it but he accidently uploaded the wrong version of my 2nd composition..

My fault but ye if I can upload the proper version monday morning that would be heaps cool because the hard copy I handed in is nothing like the uplaoded version, even the titles are different.

    thanks…

  2. Well done, Matthew Wehner!

He is sorted out how to get Sibelius to play “D.S. al Coda/ Coda”.

If you need help, he’s your man.

  3. Coda and dal segno (D.S.) repeats

Let’s create a simple coda and “dal segno” (D.S.) repeat; we’ll turn bars 22–25 into the coda section:

 Select the barline at the start of bar 22
 Choose Create  Barline  Double to add a double barline, which denotes a section end
 Choose Layout  Break  Split System to create a gap after the double barline. Notice how
Sibelius automatically restates the clefs, key signatures and braces for you.

 Select the rest at the start of bar 22 of the Trumpets in Bb staff
     Choose Create  Text  Tempo (shortcut Ctrl+Alt+T or T)
 Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) to see the word menu
 Select the first of the two coda signs (Ø) from the list of suggested words and symbols
 Type the word Coda and hit Esc.

Now let’s add the dal segno repeat. When the player reaches the end of bar 21, we’ll instruct them
to jump back to bar 14:
 Select the double barline at the end of bar 21
 Choose Create  Text  Other System Text  Repeat (D.C./D.S./To Coda)
 Right-click (Windows) or Control-click (Mac) to see the word menu
 Choose D.S. al Coda from the list of suggested words and symbols
     Hit Esc to deselect
 Ctrl+click or -click on any staff at bar 14 to make a system selection – a purple double-box will
    appear around all the staves
 Hit Z to open the Create  Symbol dialog
 Select the first of the two segno symbols ($), shown at the top of the dialog, in the row labeled
    Repeats
 Make sure that the Attach to option is set to System
 Click OK to create the symbol in the score
 Drag the symbol above the staff to an appropriate position at the end of the bar. (The difference
between symbols and other objects is that you can positions symbols anywhere you like,
enabling you to override any of Sibelius’s positioning rules.)

Now, if you play back your score, Sibelius will follow the repeats we’ve added. To learn more about

  4. Thanks to those who have been emailing final compositions through. This is fine for your final recording (or you could also upload to the Box) but . . .

As usual, your final copy must be PRINTED OUT and put in my pigeonhole by Monday 3.30pm.

Even if you haven’t had recent feedback from me, please remember, you were given a very detailed instruction sheet which lists not only what you need to do to achieve, but also a whole page of details that you should have done at each check point. Read it again and make sure you’ve covered it all!

And please continue to look at each others’ work and comment either verbally or on the Box.

finally . . . remember to use the correct FILENAME!

  5. Trilling can indeed be idiomatic for a trumpet, but depends on the style whether or not it is appropriate. Baroque trumpeting– you could trill your lips away.

Upload your latest and we can have a look

  6. is trilling on trumpet idiomatic?

  7. Left a NEW final for my first comp.. I just changed some obvious issues… and a little more.

  8. Hey Mr Burcin, i have uploaded my latest draft of compo 1. I bought back that idea that you didnt like but i think that i made it work this time round. So maybe if you have some time to look at it and give me some feed back… :)
