BAROQUE DANCE STYLES– the styles popular in Bach’s dance suites and more . . .

Sarabande– slow and stately 3 with strong accent on beat 2
Gavotte– in 4 or 2, phrase starting on the half bar
Minuet– in quick 3, named for shortness of dancer’s steps (French: “menu”)
Gigue (or Jig)– quick, lively 2, usually compound “skipping” feel

Allemande– 4/4 time, begins with an anacrusis of 1 or 3 semiquavers

Courante (or corrente)– quick 3 with a feeling of “6″ cross rhythm at cadences (like a hemiola)

Bourree– similar to gavotte (in 4), but phrase begins on last quarter of bar

Passepied– lively French dance in 3, starting on last beat of bar
