GLOSSARY of TERMS

minimalism

serialism– uses a definite order of notes as basis for composition (ex: 12 tone composition)

quasi–”as if”, often “almost”, as in quasi niente

aleatoric–chance composition (ex: dice, cards)

diatonic– using notes from the home key (i.e. no accidentals)

portamento
indeterminacy
virtuosic

musique concrete– adding tape recorded to actual instruments

overtone–a faint higher tone contained within almost any musical tone

vibrato
secular
glissando–Derived from the French glisser, to glide. So means to glide your fingers over several keys (plural = glissandi)

rembetika
polyphonic
tuplets
telharmonium–Was an early musical instrument designed by Thaddeus Cahill in 1897. Intended to be listened to with telephone receivers.
